New Therapy Option: Walking and Talking

Low humidity in August really makes me happy. Beyond the obvious benefits to my hair, it also reminds me that soon I will be able to restart a new therapy option with my clients: the walk and talk.

Having an office in Georgetown offers a really wonderful opportunity to take therapy outside the counseling room, and onto the canal walk trail or the waterfront path. For some clients, I have found that this process opens the conversation up in a way that sitting face-to-face does not. Getting the blood flowing, connecting with nature, and having your eyes set forward on a path can help people see things in a different light. With walk and talk sessions, "forward movement" becomes something we talk about figuratively, while literally moving ourselves forward on the path. It also reinforces my approach to relationship counseling, the belief that we are partners walking together toward a chosen goal.

Did you know that the recent renovation of the Waterfront Park included constructing a walking labyrinth that anyone can use for meditation and reflection? Learn more about the meditative benefits of labyrinth walking here.
