When the Vows Break

I recently researched a piece for Counseling Today magazine that examines the sort of treatment couples therapists can provide when a marriage ends. For many couples counselors, the idea of helping clients through a divorce can seem like a failure - if they come to therapy and still want to get divorced, didn't something go wrong? But a marriage's end can be an important place to apply all the supports of therapy - a safe space to talk, a third party to mediate, and a process aimed at peaceful conflict resolution. Particularly when children are involved, a structured and time-limited approach to working on a couple's communication skills can result in the most helpful conversations.
